What is Sea Hibiscus?
Hibiscus tiliaceus ‘Rubra’, also known as Red Cottonwood or Sea Hibiscus, is a colourful form of the coastal hibiscus grown for its dramatic foliage and tropical flowers. Naturally found in warm coastal environments, it is widely used as a feature tree, screen or windbreak in subtropical and tropical gardens. Its combination of dark foliage and bright blooms creates strong visual contrast throughout the year.
How to care for Sea Hibiscus
Plant in a sunny to partly shaded position in well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce watering as the plant becomes established. Apply mulch to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Prune as required to maintain shape or encourage denser growth when used as a screen. Fertilise during spring and summer to promote lush foliage and flowering.
